About the Brazilian company registry
What is a CNPJ?+
The CNPJ (Cadastro Nacional da Pessoa Juridica) is the 14-digit tax ID every company registered in Brazil holds. It is the Brazilian equivalent of a company registration number, issued by the Federal Revenue Service. The last four digits before the check digits identify the establishment: 0001 is headquarters, higher numbers are branches.

What does a lookup return?+
Legal name and trade name, registration status and the date it took effect, incorporation date, legal nature, company size, share capital, primary and secondary business activities (CNAE codes), full address, declared phone and email, and the list of partners and administrators.
Can I check whether a Brazilian supplier is active?+
Yes, and that is the most common use. The registration status field tells you whether the company is Ativa (active), Suspensa (suspended), Inapta (unfit), Baixada (closed) or Nula (void). Anything other than Ativa is worth clarifying before you sign a contract or send payment.
Where does the data come from?+
From the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service public CNPJ registry. Updates are published in batches, so there can be a short lag between a change and its appearance here. For legal purposes, use the certificate issued by the Federal Revenue portal.
